Deep Roots Medical held an open house on Friday afternoon to introduce the public to their newly opened medical marijuana dispensary at Deep Roots Harvest, located at 195 Willis Carrier Canyon in Mesquite.

The dispensary unit at the Deep Roots Harvest site was open from 3:00 to 8:00 pm for the public to obtain information and familiarize themselves with northeast Clark County's first medical marijuana facility.

According to employee Jim Bergen, the facility contains areas where marijuana is grown, processed, and packaged. However, the public on Friday was only allowed to view the dispensary where people will go to purchase marijuana. There was not any marijuana in the dispensary at the time of the open house, but there were empty packages of various products that will be sold.

Bergen said the company held the open house to invite anyone interested in learning more about the facility and its operations there. Because there has been a lot of curiosity from the public, they wanted to open their doors to show the dispensary and answer any questions or concerns the Mesquite public may have.

"The two separate buildings we have here are 45,000 square feet each," said Bergen. "Each building is sectioned off inside with different areas for the growing and processing stages of the products. Right now we are only using one building but have the second one ready for use as we grow."

Chief Executive Officer of Deep Roots Medical, Keith Capurro explained the company's intentions were to show the public that they are a professional medical facility, and not something others may envision such as some kind of a head shop.

"We currently employ 55 people and may grow from there once the dispensary opens," said Capurro. "We can't give an exact date on the opening yet because we are waiting on the state to finish their final work. However, it most likely will be the end of August."

Bergen said that the facility is only utilizing one of the two buildings right now. The building is sectioned off with multiple sections to grow and process the marijuana. The dispensary is located at the far end of the building and is where the public will go to purchase products once the facility is open.

Bergen also mentioned that if voters pass the use of recreational marijuana in November, the company plans on supplying that as well. He said that they have room to expand with the second building on the premises.

"We have to be very strict with who is allowed in here when we are open," said Bergen. "The person will have to have a valid medical card to come in and can only bring someone like their spouse. Nobody under 18 is allowed on the premises."
