New York, N.Y. - The state's first medical marijuana home delivery program is coming soon to the New York City metro area and may expand to Binghamton.

Vireo Health of New York, one of five companies licensed by the state to grow and sell medical marijuana, announced the state has given it approval to start home delivery.

The company plans to roll out its "from our greenhouse to your front door" delivery program within 90 days in an eight-county area that includes New York City, Long Island and Westchester.

Ari Hoffnung, Viereo's CEO, said he hopes to eventually provide home delivery in the Binghamton area where his company has a dispensary.

"We will talk to patients in the Southern Tier and Binghamton area to see if they are interested in this service," he said. "The more interest we see, the quicker we will be able to deliver the service to the Southern Tier."

The company said the delivery program was designed by security experts, pharmacists and doctors to serve homebound patients with life-threatening diseases like cancer.

Patients will be charged a fee, that has yet to be determined, for home delivery. "The more patients who sign up, the more affordable we can make the delivery fee," Hoffnung said.

The state announced in August it will allow home delivery as part of an effort to make the state's year-old medical marijuana program more accessible for patients.
