Rose Renton, mother of Alex, 19 who passed away last year launched the Rose Renton Medicinal Cannabis Petition 2016 at the start of the month.

Ms Renton aims to collect 500,000 signatures to present to parliament by the July 1, marking a year since her son passed away.

Although she hasn't started counting the signatures yet, she said "the feedback is incredible and people on the street are signing up without a second thought".

"The sheets are being collected daily and up to 10 full sheets - 15 signatures a sheet arrive in a single envelope from anywhere in NZ."

She says Kiwis from all walks of life are getting behind the petition.

There are many "retired folk signing along with a huge array of people including lawyers, doctors, registered nurses, engineers and artists".

After 88 days in an induced coma, Alex made history last year by becoming the first Kiwi to legally receive medicinal cannabis in a hospital environment.

Earlier this week Labour MP Damien O'Connor drafted a bill for access to medical cannabis products to be made more accessible to patients who need it.
