A policeman who allegedly took marijuana from a woman he arrested on drug charges was yesterday ordered to stand trial on six charges of perverting the course of justice, and theft and possession of the drug.

Senior Constable Lee Lorenc, 34, pleaded not guilty to all charges. Magistrate Caitlin English bailed him to appear in the County Court on August 25.

The court was told Lorenc arrested Emma Stevens at a friend's house at Coldstream after she had bought 225 grams of marijuana at Chirnside Park shopping centre on October 8, 2002.

Lorenc is alleged to have given Ms Stevens's boyfriend some marijuana for his own use before taking a plastic shopping bag of the drug back to Lilydale Police Station.

Ms Stevens told the court Lorenc said he would not weigh the marijuana he had taken from her if she agreed not to contest the charges.

The court was told that the amount of marijuana left in the shopping bag later that day was about half what another policeman had seen earlier at the Coldstream house.

Senior Constable Richard Blackwood told the court he saw Lorenc go to the police station's changing room with the bag.
