SURAT: Two policemen of Special Operations Group (SOG), Vadodara were pelted with stones by some Utkalnagar slum dwellers near rail track here when they chased and caught a man with 13.5 kg of ganja after he got down from Howrah-Porbandar Express on Sunday morning. Police have booked him under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.

Railway police officials said Santosh Shatrudhan, a native of Ganjam district in Orissa, pulled the chain of the train at 5.30 am near Utkalnagar slums, notorious for ganja dealers and country liquor dealers, after the train started to gather speed from Surat railway station.

Shatrudhan was fleeing towards the slums when Vadodara SOG policemen Parvatsinh Veersinh, 34, and Dipak Jabbarsinh, 36, chased him on the track.

When the locals of Utkalnagar noticed the chase, they started to pelt the policemen with stones, yet the duo managed to catch Shatrudhan. The policemen were rushed to New Civil Hospital (NCH) as they had suffered injuries in the hand and face.

"We have recovered ganja worth Rs 33,250 and Rs 1,220 in cash from him," said a railway police official. He also said Utkalnagar has been a trouble spot for the police since the past few years as many ganja dealers reportedly live in the slums there. On several occasions in the past when they happened to be bringing the contraband in the trains, they had pulled the chain and fled to the safety of the slums near the track, he added.

If it was legal, that would be a waste of time and the slums would be able to build themselves up on legal money that used to be underground.
