The Salem City Council has voted to permit the early sales of recreational marijuana from medical marijuana dispensaries.

The Statesman Journal reports that the council's vote Monday would permit the sales beginning Oct. 1, more than three months ahead of the planned start date.

Oregon passed Measure 91 in November. The law legalized the sale and use of recreational marijuana in the state. At the end of the legislative lesion, a law allowing medical dispensaries to conduct early sales of recreational marijuana tax-free was also passed.

However, current city code would allow only those with a valid medical marijuana license to participate in the early sales.

At Monday's meeting, Mayor Anna Peterson cast the only dissenting vote. The issue will now move to a first reading and public hearing.
