Checking your trichromes is the best way. Pick up a 60-100x pocket microscope(~$10) and its very easy to see trichromes. A 30x loupe will also work if you've got good eyes. You'll be looking for mostly cloudy trichromes with few clear trichromes, that's when she's ready. Alternatively you can allow the trichromes to gain some Amber to them for less of a "head" high.
