A graffiti-plastered garage was once a fallout shelter during the Cold War, but officials have tapped it as the perfect place for its potential next life: a medical marijuana growhouse.

"What you're looking at is the future home of Bunker Botanicals," said the company president, Geoff Whaling.

Bunker Botanicals is a Berks County-based company fighting for a license to grow medical marijuana. Officials are investing $10 million to make it happen.

"We have here not only a drying room, but we have a room that will be able to extract, because Pennsylvania law requires oils to be extracted from marijuana," said Whaling.

The bunker sits near Pottstown Memorial Hospital. Four-inch thick steel doors and remnants of a bygone-era can be found inside.

Officials said it's the most secure location to grow medical cannabis.

"What could be more safe than a former nuclear bunker that only has one major entranceway?" said Whaling.

Contractors are already inside working on the project. Officials said they'll find out in a month if they're one of the two grow houses awarded a license in the region.

"The law requires that if we're awarded a license we have to be up and operational within six months," said Whaling. "As this facility has been empty and needs many millions of dollars we're prepared to invest to make it into a medical facility."
