Alva police believe a 44-year-old Freedom mother and her 17-year-old daughter were caught just after smoking marijuana together in a vehicle in Alva's Hatfield Park last week.
Arrested and jailed Nov. 21 on charges of possession of marijuana within 1,000 feet of a school and possession of paraphernalia was Tammy Gassett, a passenger in the car. Her daughter, who was driving the vehicle, was released to her grandmother after signing a promise to appear later.
After receiving an anonymous tip at approximately 4:50 p.m. that a car with two females in it and smelling of marijuana was in the park, Alva Police Officer Michael Eckhardt went to the park and found a green Lincoln with a tag that matched the tip's description as it was leaving the park. He stopped the vehicle and questioned the driver about the smell of marijuana, which he, too, noticed.
Both the mother and daughter exhibited signs of being under the influence of drugs and during questioning of both, Officer Eckhardt was told where to find a small bag of a green leafy substance that later field tested positive for marijuana.
When he asked how the marijuana was being smoked, he was told "with papers." The daughter mentioned that a pipe was in the car. The mother retrieved a pipe from her purse. According to Officer Eckhart's report, the pipe was warm, had the strong odor of burnt marijuana, and contained a burnt marijuana roach. The residue was "sticky and moist," a sign the pipe had been used recently.
A search of the daughter's purse yielded another bag containing a substance that field tested positive or marijuana.
Officer Eckhardt informed Gasset that she was also being charged with aiding and encouraging a minor to participate in a drug related offense. However, that charge was not listed among the booking charges at the Woods County Jail. Gassett was released the next day on a Personal Recognizance bond with a $5,000 liability.
