Pruning: outdoors in pots

so friends tell me that in northern climes it's best to prune all fan leaves now before a frost to stimulate final bud growth.

I'm looking at frost in a few days and they look great but I don't want them to die.

I don't know about that, but lots of places sell plant covers to help protect against frost damage, so a web search would bring up many, I expect. You'd have to deal with installing/removing them, of course.
