Res level higher than nozzles - the res water seeps out

What do people do when their res is taller than the setup against the phenomena I tried to describe in the Subject.
I tried to install a breather so the tallest part of the manifold fills with air and prevents the flow, will go check if it works.

I made it even simpler for the return line:

nice great thinking, i did that with a dual output air pump on one of my fish tanks

This doesn't work. It appears that there is not enough air to stop the siphoning, I had to get the check valves and fittings to make it work.
