Marijuana will not be for sale in San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf near tourist trinkets after city officials denied a permit to a pot club seeking to open in the city's well-known destination.

San Francisco allows the clubs to operate if they distribute marijuana for medical purposes, but even America's most permissive city limits where the clubs may open, such as barring them from locating too close to schools.

The city planning commission voted 4-2 on Thursday to deny the Green Cross marijuana club a permit for a Fisherman's Wharf storefront amid complaints by residents and businesses.

"We just felt it was not the proper location for such an operation," said Rodney Fong, president of the Fisherman's Wharf Merchants Association. "It's a visible part of San Francisco."

Located along the city's northern shore, the Fisherman's Wharf area with its seafood restaurants, scenic views and souvenir stores is one of the city's most popular tourist destinations.
