During impassioned and lengthy debate on medical marijuana June 4 on the Louisiana House floor, state Rep. James Armes made a bold suggestion.

Why not let the prisoners at Louisiana State Penitentiary grow the stuff at Angola?

The proposal got some laughs, but Armes was serious.

Among the Leesville Democrat's concerns about the medical marijuana bill, which was later signed into law, was the potential for corruption surrounding the grow site.

The Louisiana Legislature ultimately decided to offer the cultivation contract to the LSU/Southern University Ag Centers, if they want the job.
