Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero has dismissed a 23-year-old field staffer from his gubernatorial campaign who was arrested Saturday when police found marijuana in his vehicle.
Chad Guerrant, a Lansing Community College student, will not be associated with the campaign while his case goes through the courts, Bernero said in a statement released Sunday.
Randy Hannan, Bernero's deputy chief of staff, said Guerrant worked in the mayor's office as an unpaid intern from October until March. Guerrant declined comment through a supporter.
Michigan State Police Lt. Chris Kelenske said Guerrant was driving west Saturday on Interstate 96 when troopers stopped him near the Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard ramp for not wearing a seat belt. A trooper found an undisclosed amount of marijuana in Guerrant's vehicle. Troopers plan to send charging paperwork to the county prosecutor's office this week.
