Neuroscientist said the legalization of cannabis oil, as a medical treatment, gives Texans with epilepsy a new avenue to control their disease.

Monday, Governor Greg Abbott signed SP 339 into law, allowing cannabidoil (CBD) with low-THS to be regulated by the state and used as a medical treatment for epilepsy. The law makes Texas the 15th state to legalize a type of medical marijuana.

The Epilepsy Foundation reports nearly three million American are diagnosed with epilepsy and one out of three, have uncontrolled seizures and resistant to all medications.

Jared Dempsey, neuroscientist and executive director of Addiction Recovery Research Institute, said case studies have proven that a tailored and controlled dosage of cannabis oil helps reduce the amount of seizures for some epileptics that are resistant to medications.

"There are many people that need this treatment, because no other treatment works and they are going to places to access it and it can be quite dangerous," Dempsey said. "What we need to do and what the state is moving towards is putting this in the hands of physicians and providers and regulating it and providing therapeutic dose levels."

He said it is still a controversial treatment and the research continues to study any side effects of treatment.

"All drugs can be used for good purposes and and they can be used for bad purposes," Dempsey said. "That is the same case with marijuana, you can have derivatives of marijuana that can actually be very helpful and therapeutic and can also be abused."
