With all the negative stigma around the use of marijuana (cannabis) in many countries, it's no wonder the idea that it can treat ailments is met with skepticism. The value of the plant extracts has not only been disputed but considered an illegal act from those who abuse it for recreational use. Opponents feel studies describing its benefits are not credible and actually harmful as well as addictive. However, despite objections and legalization restrictions, medical marijuana usage is on the rise.

Considered a part of alternative medicine, marijuana is a source of natural substance from the plant Cannabis Sativa and is used by many patients suffering several conditions. From arthritis, cancer, colitis, HIV, multiple sclerosis, radiation therapy, sleep disorders, to tourette's syndrome, the use of prescribed medical cannabis has been shown to have beneficial effects.

Some effects include:

Improving feelings of nausea and vomiting, lack of appetite, spasms, neurogenic pain, movement disorders, relieves migraines, slows tumor growth, pain and relieves PMS.

The active ingredient THC is linked to contributing to the benefits. It is important to note that the quality of weed for medicinal purposes as compared to street uses has been deemed to have a vast difference.

Considering the context of which the cannabis is used, medical cannabis is legal in Canada, Germany, Netherlands, Spain, Austria to name a few countries.

Common ways to administer medical cannabis are through vaporization, drinking, smoking dried buds, extracts, capsules. Marinol and dronabinol is a pharmaceutical product that is offered in pill form that contains THC. Other active ingredients are still under study.

Overall, more studies are proving the use of marijuana reduces symptoms and harmful side effects seen in patients who are on pharmaceutical drugs.

With certain chronic diseases taking a toll in our community today, more physicians have been recommending the use of cannabis.
