How to you ensure that you get tight compact buds?

I know that strain plays a role, but what other things can be done to make them tighter and harder?

I am not sure how to make them close up. I can see where the pistols are coming out and there is a gap that I assume should not be there. It makes them so light and airy, but obviously decreases the yeild.

Just got a HID system set up. Hopefully that helps.

Good lights: Check!

Anything else contribute to more compact buds other than genetics and proper lighting?

I've heard high temps and the lights too close can make it fluffier and lose its natural flavors.
