I am mixing various substrates and potting mixes and store them (outside on the porch) in normal, simple blue trash bags you can get in any supermarket. For the longest I noticed a weird smell of my mixes which I couldn't put a finger on.
Today I find that the fresh bags itself, right out of the package have that smell. I am pretty sure it's petrol(eum) or mineral oil, very similar if not the same smell as vaseline.
Now I am somewhat concerned that there is some chemicals leaching from those bags getting into my soil...and this of course could be bad. Or would any smell, assuming it's from petroleum be harmless?
