Corpus Christi - State lawmakers are introducing a bill that would make the possession of an ounce or less of marijuana more like paying a traffic ticket.

Nueces County Sheriff Jim Kaelin said the jail often houses people who have been charged with minor possession of marijuana and are unable to post bond. That, in turn, leads to overcrowding inside of the jail and causes taxpayers to be left footing the bill for the Class C misdemeanor.

"We can change the behavior without costing the taxpayers a lot of money," Kaelin said. "It's over $80 a day to keep somebody in this jail."

Kaelin said unless the person can post bond, they could be locked up for up to 180 days, all at the taxpayer's expense.

The proposed bill would make possession of one ounce or less of marijuana a non-criminal offense punishable by a fine of $250. Right now, possession of two ounces or less is punishable by up to a $2,000 fine and 180 days in jail.
