Anderson, Ind. - Authorities have charged a man with dealing marijuana after police said they found 144 pounds of the drug, worth more than $200,000, in a false compartment of a pickup truck's fuel tank.

James Derrickson, 54, of Elwood, was charged Monday in a Madison County court with conspiracy to deal marijuana, a Class C felony. Derrickson, who police say was buying the marijuana for people in Indianapolis, had $50,000 cash in his truck.

A second man was expected to be charged, and an Arizona man who allegedly delivered the drugs to Elwood was cooperating with police, said Madison County Drug Task Force Sgt. Jeff Ash.

According to a probable cause affidavit, Illinois State Police contacted the task force on Thursday after they found the marijuana in an extra diesel tank of the Arizona man's truck.

The man told police he was taking the drugs to sell in Elwood, about 40 miles northeast of Indianapolis. Madison County task force officers and Illinois police on Friday wired the Arizona man with listening devices and he called Derrickson who told him to meet him at a restaurant in Elwood, the affidavit said.

The pair then drove to a nearby farmhouse where police were already staked out.

Police watched as the deal was made and then arrested Derrickson and the farmhouse owner, who has yet to be charged, Ash said.

Ash said the Arizona man was charged in Illinois, but not in Indiana.

"Heck yeah, it's a good seizure. It's a good amount," Ash said.

He said marijuana sells for $1,200 or $1,500 a pound in Indiana, so it was worth about $216,000. Derrickson was being held today at the Madison County jail on a $100,000 bond.
