UAB has received final approval from federal regulatory agencies to begin studies of cannabidiol oil, or CBD oil, also known as The Carly's Law study.
The law, named after Carly Chandler, went into effect in June of 2014, and it allows children with rare disorders to have access to a marijuana-derived oil called CBD. The extract comes from a strain of the plant that does not produce a "high."
Supporters say the non-hallucinogenic oil derivative of marijuana can help treat seizures.
The UAB studies are designed to test the safety of CBD oil in patients with intractable seizures. CBD oil, a derivative of the cannabis plant, is delivered orally as an oily liquid, according to UAB News.
UAB will enroll 100 subjects in the two studies - 50 adults and 50 children. Each patient application will be reviewed by a panel of UAB neurologists.
