DUBAI - A Ukrainian model has been sentenced to one year in jail for possessing 0.05 grams of hashish.

YK, 20, who was working in the city, will be deported after serving her sentence, the Dubai Criminal Court of First Instance ruled.

She was arrested by anti-narcotics officers at Dubai Mall on November 19 after an informant tipped them off that she used the drug.

The woman pleaded not guilty to the charges, but police said she voluntarily turned over the evidence against her.

“After we searched her at the police station, we found no illegal substances on her,” a policewoman, Iman al Bulooshi, told prosecutors.

“She then herself told us that she had a small piece of hashish in her car. She gave us a tiny piece of hashish which was inside her wallet in her car.”

Blood and urine tests showed no trace of the drug in her system. She has two weeks to file an appeal.

The UAE has a zero-tolerance policy on drug use and possession; those found guilty of drug possession face up to 10 years in jail. Those convicted of drug trafficking are usually sentenced to life in prison and, in some cases, death.
