Charlottesville - Central Virginia supporters of legalizing a cash crop that's similar to marijuana are heading to the state capital in Richmond.

Monday kicks off a week of meetings with state delegates and senators about House Bill 1277 and Senate Bill 955. Both bills propose allowing the cultivation and manufacturing of industrial hemp in the commonwealth.

The Virginia Industrial Hemp Coalition and Vote Hemp are expecting as many as 200 people will lobby around the cause. They say legalizing industrial hemp in the commonwealth will help boost the economy.

"Monday, I'm going to Richmond to lobby for industrial hemp HB 1277. I feel that it would support farmers in the local community and bring industries into Virginia," said Jess Blossoms, industrial hemp lobbyist

The Virginia Hemp Coalition says the fiber can be used for everything from food to foundations for buildings.

Hemp is a common term for high-growing varieties of the Cannabis plant. Marijuana typically comes from low-growing Cannabis plants, which have a higher content of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).
