ZION, Ill. - Police in the far northern Chicago suburb of Zion say a high school official there is accused of trying to destroy evidence that marijuana was growing in the basement of a home where she rents an apartment.

Zion Police Chief Larry Booth says 38-year-old Candace Blanton was charged Tuesday with felony obstruction of justice and misdemeanor charges of possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

Blanton is dean of students at Zion-Benton Township High School.

Booth says she reportedly tried to destroy nearly 20 marijuana plants before police executed a search warrant.

The police chief says there is no evidence that Blanton was selling marijuana.

Blanton, who was released on $150,000 bail, has been placed on paid administrative leave at her school.

She could not be reached for comment Wednesday.
