Indiana House Committee To Hear Industrial Hemp Bill

Indiana lawmakers are considering a bill that would legalize industrial hemp. Hemp is marijuana's cousin, but it has a much smaller amount of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), the chemical that gives you a high. It can be used to make paper, clothing, building materials, car parts and more. In fact, some of those products are already being made here in Indiana with imported hemp from other countries.

That's where the bill comes in. Some lawmakers say Hoosier companies shouldn't have to pay to import a product Indiana farmers could be growing. The bill has passed the Indiana Senate and at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, it goes before a House committee. Watch the live stream of that hearing here. In ten states already, including Kentucky, industrial hemp is legal. Lawmakers say Indiana should be next. There's a health impact, too. The passing of the bill means hemp oil would be allowed.
