How do I make my soil drain better?

One of my biggest problems from my last grow was I over-watered too much because my soil wasn't draining well. After chopped my plants and pulled the root ball I noticed the bottom third was still very damp which caused root rot. I have a mixture of topsoil, sand, perlite and peat moss. I still have a bunch of this soil left over and wanted to use it for my next grow and I was wondering what I can add to it to make it drain better. More perlite maybe?

What lil stinker said. I would stay away from the sand on the next batch of soil too. Good luck to you!

Actually I didn't add any sand to it. There was just a lot mixed in with the top soil that I had. Why is sand bad for it?

I see. Sand retains water, that was the only reason I mentioned it.
