A.G. Asks Feds For Restraint On Medical Pot

SAN FRANCISCO–California Attorney General Kamala Harris says federal prosecutors should be careful not to overreach in their crackdown on pot dispensaries even though there are "definite ambiguities" in the state's medical marijuana laws.

Harris offered her first public comments Thursday on the crackdown announced two weeks ago by the four federal prosecutors in California. They are ordering marijuana clubs they think operate as fronts for drug dealers or too close to children to close.

Harris' office released a statement in response to inquiries from the news media in which she said she shared the U.S. attorneys' concern that gangs and criminal enterprises are exploiting the state's liberal stand on medical marijuana.

But she also says an overly broad intervention by the feds could make it harder for legitimate marijuana users to secure the drug.
