Earlier this month, officials with the Alaska Marijuana Control Board ended their two day meeting without making it through even half of the items on their agenda, including the contested issue of whether or not people should be able to smoke on-site at pot shops or other retail facilities.
On Tuesday, the control board is scheduled to meet again, to address several regulations proposals which were postponed at the previous meeting. The issue of on-site consumption will not be brought before the board this week, or even this year.
Erika McConnell, the director of the Alcohol and Marijuana Control Office, said in an email that "At the last meeting, the board created a subcommittee to work on the onsite draft and bring it back to the board in April. "
Of course, even if the control board approves the on-site consumption proposal in April, it would require review by the Department of Law as well as approval from the office of the Lt. Governor before being implemented. It would then go into effect a month after signing.
In a public notice, the control board said that the public meetings scheduled for Nov. 28 and 29 would consider these issues, as well as proposed marijuana establishments whose owners have applied for licenses. Also included, are "updates on implementation of marijuana establishment licensing, ongoing and proposed regulations projects, and other matters that may come before it," the notice said.
The public meeting will be held at the Alaska Scientific Crime Detection Laboratory on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Avenue in Anchorage, getting underway at 9 a.m. on both days.
