The Augusta Board of Education has approved a policy that would allow students to use medical marijuana to manage various medical conditions.
The Kennebec Journal reports the new policy was written as a means to guide school staff members and was based on a model from the Maine School Management Association.
Board members said the policy was added in the wake of a state law allowing its use, not out of concern about the issue locally.
State law permits eligible students to have medical marijuana administered by a primary caregiver. Students are not allowed to possess the medical marijuana themselves.
Assistant Superintendent Donna Madore responded to criticism by saying "this is a law, a new regulation, and we have to provide allowances for it to happen."
