A Calaveras County cannabis group provided 2,650 pounds of food and $2,700 to The Resource Connection food bank this week, assisting the nonprofit in what is typically known to be a slow time of year.

Meg Gonsalves, treasurer for the Calaveras Cannabis Alliance, said 30 volunteers of the 100-member organization assisted in the contribution. Members of the alliance gave $2,700 of the $5,200 value in contributions. CCA matched what members raised.

"All the money technically came from the members," Gonsalves said referring to the dues members of the CCA pay to the organization, which budgeted an amount for contribution to The Resource Connection.

Gonsalves said they learned about the need for donations while participating in a Christmas philanthropic event in December. She said she spoke to someone who stressed the need due to the lull during the first quarter of the year.

Efforts to donate in the first quarter began in December. Gonsalves said they were able to execute the campaign before the end of March, their target date of completion of the project.

Gonsalves said the food was obtained from Mar-Val in Valley Springs.

"All were non-perishables. They said they were hurting for cereal and pasta," she said.
