Monterey County is keen on collecting public comment on medical marijuana.

The county is hosting a second community meeting from 5-6 p.m. on March 7, Monday at the Bradley School in Bradley. The meeting targets residents in South Monterey County.

Craig Spencer the county's associate planner, Mike Novo, director of the county's Resource Management Agency (RMA) and Jacqueline Onciano, the RMA's services manager, will make a presentation and open up the meeting for comments.

Medical marijuana is a hot button issue for the county. Proponents argue that allowing sales and cultivation of medical marijuana can ignite job growth including in research and development for the county. Opponents are concerned about public safety and public health.

The county is creating a permanent ordinance on the sales and cultivation of medical marijuana. At the county meeting on Feb. 26 the Board of Supervisors voted to extend the temporary ordinance for a year until Feb. 26, 2017. This buys the county more time to create permanent regulations.

That ordinance bans any new businesses that sell and grow medical marijuana in the county's unincorporated areas.

The county's first community meeting on Feb. 16 drew upwards of 75 people. The next meeting is scheduled on Thursday, March 17 at the county's offices at 168 West Alisal St.

Onciano said that more community meetings will be held depending on public residents.

"If the South County asks us to come back we are going to accommodate them," Onciano said.
