ST. JOHN'S =AD Premier Roger Grimes says the federal government should go
beyond decriminalizing marijuana =AD Ottawa should legalize pot.

The federal justice minister says he will introduce legislation in 2003 to
relax the country's marijuana laws.

Grimes says the federal government should go further, "not only
decriminalize it, legalize it," he says. "Have it produced in factories and
plants; raise some revenues from it. And treat it the same as alcohol, put
an age limit on it. Recognize that there is some use of it out there, and
make it safer."

So far Grimes is the only premier to support even decriminalizing marijuana.
Other provincial leaders say pot fuels organized crime and is too much of a
health risk.

Grimes acknowledges "experimenting" with marijuana in university, more than
30 years ago. He says he didn't like it.
