The planned medical marijuana growing facility in Kincardine is close to beginning production.

Advanced Medical Marihuana Canada (AMMCan) Director of Operations John Fowler says the company is on the cusp of getting their federal licence to operate and the hope is to begin production by the end of the year.

Fowler admits there have been delays when dealing with Health Canada approvals but better to get the process right than having to backtrack later.

He says unfortunately it has resulted in layoffs of some of the people initially hired to get the plant ready.

Fowler explains he went to Kincardine's Committee of the Whole meeting on Wednesday because they wanted to bring councillors up to date on what's happening with the facility and he says they're not stopping there.

On Thursday, the same presentation will be made to Bruce County councillors.

Fowler says they have a 342,000 square foot facility with approximately 40,000 square feet prepared for production.

He says 16,000 square feet will be used for cultivation which will allow the company to do upwards of five-million-dollars worth of business.

Fowler predicts when the entire facility is up and running, they expect to be doing hundreds of millions of dollars worth of business, employing over 100 people producing over 100 pounds of marijuana a day.

Fowler says most of the employees will be from the local area because they want to be a good corporate citizen.

The AMMCan facility is located in the former greenhouses at the Bruce Energy Centre.

Canadian Bioceutical Corporation told Bayshore Broadcasting News last week that its plans for a proposed medical marijuana facility in Owen Sound have been scaled back because of Health Canada delays.
