A change
Many folks around the country, or even possibly the world, are screaming for change. Specific to this magazine, is a change in the laws that prohibit the use or marijuana.
Government is a reflection of society on steroids. Generally, public safety and wellbeing or even happiness is the objective. However, with all of the diversity that exist, and the constitutional fundamentals, it stifles itself in trying to make everyone happy, or at least accept that you cannot allow smoking if one person in the room objects to it. Candidates for public office, severely conscious of polls, scramble to rally enough support to get elected. So many constituents insist on saving us from ourselves and spend every waking moment convincing candidates that something must be done. You cannot allow marijuana to be legal, that will put more drunk drivers on the road and statistics will validate that claim if allowed.
Government is also a business. It is about controlling as much money as possible. If a candidate can control money he can also control voters with that money, and be reelected. It is almost as natural as water seeking its own level. If you want to get an elected officials attention you have to be conscious that his hand is always out. He will not move an inch unless there is something in it for him. He has to have a way to generate money to control money and be reelected. He needs to be able to establish an empire he can put his name on that will employ people that are dependent on his empire.
Something that can be used in place of money is a very strong lobby of dedicated voters. We need voters that insist that they are allowed to treat their bodies and property with the rights that are guaranteed by the US constitution. Constitutionally speaking, marijuana prohibition is illegal. Growing and smoking marijuana in your own home meets all the requirements guaranteed by the US constitution. There is a huge distinction between growing and smoking your own and selling it to school kids or even driving after you have smoked.
Real change in government is almost always gradual. Think of a huge ship changing course, not a speedboat. Revenue plans need to be developed, lobbies need to be accounted for, future empires need to be conceived, and mistakes that could cost elections considered. Fast change in government, like fast money, is desirable, but not reality.
There are initiatives in various states in favor of lessening the prohibition on marijuana. Although these initiatives are flawed, they should still be considered progress. You cannot beat the government into shape to change a law. You have to use your brains and play the game of politics. Know thy enemy and you will defeat him. In these initiatives and all those that will follow in these states and others progress should be considered. Remember, change in government is like navigating a huge ship.
