Considering more and more states are legalizing marijuana and a record number of American support recreational cannabis, it's no surprise that members of Congress are also vocalizing their support for ending America's harsh drug laws. But it appears one Democrat is really putting himself out as an ally to marijuana.

California Democratic Congressman Ro Khanna has made a number of recent statements supporting marijuana legalization. Last week he challenged Republicans by saying that if guns can be carried across state lines, then marijuana should be allowed to as well. And Khanna has ratcheted up his support this week by saying cannabis prohibition should be ended at the federal level and calling for possession jail sentences to be commuted.

Considering Khanna is a Democrat from California, his support of marijuana is hardly surprising and unlikely to garner much controversy. But even among liberal members of Congress, publicly supporting cannabis legalization is still pretty rare. Sure, there's support on both sides of the aisle for medical marijuana, but recreational is a different ballgame.

But also considering the amount of support for legalization around the country, it will be interesting to see if marijuana becomes an issue that the Democratic party adopts in the coming years.
