Cumberland County Sheriff on Board of Pot Dispensary Applicant

As state officials prepare to announce the winning applicants chosen to operate medical marijuana dispensaries across the state, a member of the board of directors of one of the non-profits vying for state approval is the current sheriff of Cumberland County, Mark Dion.

Dion, who says he's a long time advocate for the medical use of marijuana, says he hopes that by serving on the board, a position for which he's not being paid, he would be able to provide his criminal justice colleagues with credible information, "and that I would be able to advocate within the board for practices and procedures that would sustain a committment to being a good neighbor within the community that the dispensary is located."

Dion says he doesn't believe that being a sheriff and being on a dispensary board constitutes a conflict of interest. He says that Maine voters have approved medical marijuana dispensaries and the U.S. Attorney General recognizes the legitimacy of dispensaries in those states which have approved them by statute.
