Encinitas City Council members will debate Wednesday what to do with a medical marijuana initiative that was certified as ballot-ready last week.
The initiative proposes to create regulations for medical marijuana dispensaries, including what hours they can be open and where they can locate. If a prospective dispensary met these conditions, it would qualify for a city permit allowing it to open, the initiative states.
The council's choices include adopting the ordinance; agreeing to put it -without changes- on the ballot in November 2014; or ordering a report on the initiative.
One option isn't available to the council members. They can't put the item on the Nov. 6 general election ballot because the certification by county elections officials occurred too close to the paperwork filing deadline for the coming election.
Wednesday's meeting begins at 6 p.m. at City Hall, 505 S. Vulcan Ave.
