Medical marijuana supporters will have to wait another six months to open dispensaries in Bonita Springs.

The Bonita Springs City Council approved to extend its medical marijuana dispensary moratorium until the end of the year.

John Dulmer, director of community development, explained that state lawmakers did not help the city decide how to authorize dispensaries.

"The (state) Legislature did us no favors," Dulmer said.

Under current state law, dispensaries should be treated like pharmacies in city uses.

In Bonita Springs, pharmacies can open in many areas of the city, including strip malls, which city staff worry would not be restrictive enough for medical marijuana dispensaries.

The Legislature is meant to re-evaluate its new law in six months. The council decided to wait until after that occurs before moving forward with local plans.
