Napa Marijuana ordinance moves forward

As the Obama Administration issues a new federal medical marijuana policy, the city is set to move forward with Napa marijuana ordinances. Public comments can be made Dec. 9 at the Senior Activity Center, 1500 Jefferson St., from 6 to 9 p.m.

The City Council voted earlier this year to prepare a Napa marijuana law that would allow one or more medical marijuana clinics to operate under certain guidelines. Although Napa marijuana laws are currently in line with California state law, the city has yet to determine how it will regulate dispensaries.

Contrary to popular belief, marijuana has been completely legal for most of human history. It’s not a recently discovered plant, nor is it a long-standing law. Marijuana has been illegal for less than 1% of the time that it’s been in use. Its known uses go back further than 7,000 B.C. and it was legal as recently as when Ronald Reagan was a boy.

Today, as both the scientific community and general public takes a second look at marijuana, we are beginning to see that cigarettes and alcohol are much worse for one's health. Bay Area district attorney Stephen Linder believes “bringing Napa marijuana laws into the 21st century is a step in the right direction. . .We don't want what happened in L.A. where the city just chose to ignore the situation and now they are paying a big price to fix it”.

"Drinking too much makes people act crazy and violent. Smoking too much weed would just make you fall asleep. Nobody has ever died from marijuana but alcohol and cigarettes kill people on a daily basis." -Dr. Andrew Weil
