Group Gears Up For New Medical Marijuana Push In Florida

Medical Marijuana almost became legal in Florida, last year. Now, the same group that pushed for that amendment to the Florida Constitution has plans made for the 2016 elections.

9 Investigates' Christopher Heath found that the same major donors from the attempt to change the Constitution in 2014 are behind the new push.

Orlando attorney John Morgan essentially bankrolled the effort last year, and this year, according to the most recent numbers from the state, his law firm is once again picking up the tab.

Records show two donations in June accounted for 80 percent of the group's total donations for the month.

In 2014, Morgan gave People United for Medical Marijuana $250,000. His law firm contributed an additional $3.8 million to the cause.

Now Morgan's money will allow the group to basically start the process over, gathering signatures and taking the amendment before the Florida Supreme Court for approval.

Since the first of the year, People United for Medical Marijuana has taken in $373,000, which puts the group more than $100,000 ahead of its pace two years ago.

"It's incredibly time consuming. It costs a lot of money. It's not something that you can do half-heartedly; you have to be fully committed. Ultimately, that's what we've been doing," said attorney Matt Morgan with People United for Medical Marijuana.

Right now, there isn't a well-funded opposition movement against medical marijuana.

Last year, casino billionaire Sheldon Adelson bankrolled the push against medical marijuana, helping defeat the measure.

So far this year, Adelson has not given money to any anti-marijuana groups.
