MADISON: Friday evening's 8th Annual IMMLY Benefit at Madison's Frequency Lounge near the State Capitol provided a fun kickoff to the weekend's activities as attendees crowded the club for two bands, speakers, and Glass Nickel pizza and other refreshments.

The Frequency was teeming with medical cannabis supporters. Jef Smith of Brok'n Arrow played first, providing some Grateful Dead-infused rock tunes. A particular highlight came when IMMLY Founder Jacki Rickert joined Jef onstage for a performance of the classic train song, "City of New Orleans", inspired by her recent rail trip to Oregon.

During a speaker break between bands, Jacki stayed on stage and was joined by her fellow "MMJ Commando Squad" cannabis colleagues, Gary Storck and Jim Miller. The three took turns commenting and speaking. Storck in noting the Jacki Rickert Medical Marijuana Act had failed to pass this year, instead of being able to register in a Wisconsin state medical marijuana program, he and Rickert instead had to travel to Oregon to be able to register in a state program. Wisconsin's "brain drain" to medical marijuana states was also discussed, with more and more "medical marijuana refugees" departing off to more tolerant and compassionate locales..

Jim Miller, a New Jersey activist, noted the gross deficiencies of the New Jersey medical marijuana law, strongly urging that Wisconsin not make the same mistakes, particularly in it's move to continue to prohibit patients and caregivers from cultivating their ownn medicine like most states. The NJ is only starting to take patient applications now, and the dispensary system that will provide medicine to patients at an unknown cost is a long ways from being able to provide a single gram of medicine.

The Commando Squad's speech was followed by Tori LaChapelle, a Madison nurse and medical cannabis supporter who described not only how it could benefit the patients she cares for, but how it could offer her relief for her own fibromyalgia and other ailments.

The Riddiough-Shanahan Band, aka Utopian Rag, an incarnation of which has played all 8 IMMLY benefits, provided a strong finish. The four piece band, led by guitarists Mark Shanahan and Bruce Riddiough, provided some serious blues-rock, with Riddiough and Shanahan both frequently offering dazzling solos while the rythmn section of Fred Matt and Bob "Hot Dog" Mueller provided a steady beat.

After a rocking cover of Bo Diddley's, "Who do you Love," the band closed out the event with the traditional sing-along version of the Wisconsin medical cannabis anthem, Legal Medicine Blues". LMB was witten by former Shanahan bandmate Rick Harris, with Shanahan providing guitar on Harris' recording of the tune.

Harvest Fest continues Saturday and Sunday Oct. 2 & 3.
