A Royal Oak man who told city officials last month that he'd sue if they passed a proposal to limit medical marijuana did so today.

Adam Brook, 42, an organizer of the annual Hash Bash of marijuana users who gather each spring in Ann Arbor, said he is a state-registered user of medical marijuana for chronic back pain and thyroid cancer. Brook used a cane to enter the Royal Oak City Commission meeting Jan. 24, when about two dozen people spoke against the proposal before it passed 4-3.

"We're laying off police officers, and yet they forced me to sue them," he said today.

The zoning amendment, which bans cultivation of medical marijuana, will take effect Feb. 7, City Clerk Melanie Halas said today. Licensed patients can continue to use marijuana but can't grow it.

City Attorney Dave Gillam said the city had not decided whether residents now growing medical marijuana "will be grandfathered in" and allowed to continue growing the drug.

Birmingham, Bloomfield Hills, Bloomfield Township, Livonia and Lyon Township have also been sued recently by medical marijuana patients.
