Hemp – The Industrial Kind – May Be Making Inroads

If you found my interview with Chico entrepreneur Jake Wade, maker of fine-quality hemp shirts, interesting, you might also be intrigued with this tidbit.

On this Fourth of July, an American flag made of hemp flew over the U.S. Capitol building. Likely it was to uphold history and prompt the change of current laws.

Wade cited historians who said the first American flags were made of hemp. Wade would like industrial hemp to be legal so that it costs less for him to purchase for his shirts.

While industrial hemp doesn't have the psychoactive properties of marijuana, it is still illegal to grow, but not to import. So people like Wade have to get their hemp from Canada, paying dearly to import it. Some legislators feel they shouldn't have to, hence the hemp flag on the Fourth.

An amendment to legalize industrial hemp for research purposes was included in the Farm Bill that passed last week, but only allows university research on it in states that have legalized industrial hemp production, such as Colorado.

Those pushing to get legal cultivation are undoubtedly continuing their campaign. Wade is keeping his fingers crossed.
