Hilo, Hawaii - New state data aimed at helping newly licensed marijuana dispensaries determine where to set up shop shows the Big Island has nearly twice as many medical marijuana patients as Oahu.

The Hawaii Tribune-Herald reports the state Department of Health figures show there were about 6,100 patients on Hawaii Island as of June 30. That number compared to Oahu's 3,400 patients and comprised more than 40 percent of the medical marijuana patients statewide.

On the Big Island, about 700 patients live in Pahoa, while only about 640 patients were counted on Hilo, which has roughly three times as many people as Pahoa. Kona also had around 700 patients.

Health department spokeswoman Janice Okubo says the July data on census-designated places will be updated yearly and used to determine where future dispensary licenses will be issued.
