Legalized medical marijuana is coming soon to Ohio, and Marijuana Business Daily is bringing its "crash course" here to inform potential entrepreneurs.

"We chose Ohio because of the potential for the industry," said Editorial Director Chris Walsh.

Half of the U.S. has legalized marijuana in some form, and the Ohio legislature followed suit this year in response to a ballot push from national advocacy group Marijuana Policy Project. (You can read who donated to the group's Ohio-based campaign here.)

But not all legalization is equal. Ohio is eyed with curiosity because of its large population and the way the law is structured. Most of the 20 ailments that qualify for medical marijuana treatment are specific and severe — conditions like HIV/AIDS and cancer.

But the legislation signed by Gov. John Kasich also includes pain that is chronic and severe or intractable. That's a key difference in the marijuana market, Walsh said.

"Pain is the big one," he said. "Those are the largest medical marijuana states and industries because a broader swath of patients can access the medicine."

Other states, like Illinois, offer more conditions but are more narrow.

"That's why there's a lot of interest and a lot of potential for Ohio's medical marijuana industry," Walsh said.

The Marijuana Business Crash Course will be held in Cleveland Aug. 17 and Cincinnati Aug. 19. It's a good opportunity for entrepreneurs on the fence about entering the industry, Walsh said, but not for average Joes looking to make a quick buck because marijuana has rules and restrictions that other businesses do not. Banking, for example, isn't cut-and-dry.

"You need to research this industry before you decide whether you're going to get into it," he said. "You have to know what you're getting into — if you don't you might very well fail. I've seen it so many times."

Kasich signed House Bill 523 into law on June 8. Marijuana will become legal in the Buckeye State on Sept. 8, although dispensaries will take time to open.

Walsh expects about 2 percent of Ohioans to eventually use medical marijuana.
