Legal Pot Sales Expected Soon In Illinois

There won't be a shortage of medical marijuana news this year in Illinois.

Regulated pot sales began Nov. 9, and dozens of cultivation centers, including a Rock Island facility operated by Chicago-based Green Thumb Industries, are growing and distributing the plant. So far, 20 dispensaries are licensed and ready to sell.

Meanwhile, in Milan, Nature's Treatment of Illinois Inc., a pot shop located near Stern Beverage Inc., has yet to serve any Illinois Quad-City patients. Matt Stern, co-owner of the Budweiser distribution facility, must register his employees with the state before officials perform an on-site inspection, the final step in the licensing process.

As of Dec. 2, the Department of Public Health had approved 3,600 patients, including 22 patients under the age of 18.

Of the 23 states with medical marijuana programs, Illinois has one of the most restrictive. But from now through Jan. 31, Illinoisans can petition the state to add debilitating medical conditions or diseases to the program.

In Iowa, however, the law is much more limited, allowing only for cannabis oil to be used for treatment of a small number of conditions.
