Maine Medical Marijuana Center Expresses Interest In Moving To Norton

A medical marijuana center has expressed interest in moving to town.

Town Manager Michael Yunits said he and Beth Wierling, the town's director of planning and economic development, met with Beacon Compassion Center about the company's interest in bringing either a dispensary or distribution center to town.

Yunits said there are no plans currently on the table and Beacon came to the town to see if they could explore the possibility of a move to Norton, and if selectmen are opposed to such a facility.

Beacon is one of three companies to approach North Attleboro to explore the possibility of a move to that town, and last year dropped a bid for a dispensary in Foxboro after selectmen in that town took no action on the proposal, effectively blocking it.

Selectman Bob Kimball said he would listen to a proposal, but asked if a facility is necessary in Norton, pointing to facilities approved, but not yet up and running in nearby Brockton and Taunton – as well as the potential in North Attleboro.

"How many of these things do we need?" he said. "Is there really a need for one in Norton?"

Selectman Tim Giblin said he was willing to listen to a proposal – like any business looking to come to town – but said he had a lot of questions.

"It'll change portions of the town, it will," he said.

In October 2013, town meeting voters passed a bylaw to restrict the location of a medical marijuana facility to the industrial park, away from schools and residential areas.
