Marijuana Petitioners Unveil Sign To Recruit Volunteers

People getting off the Lions Gate and heading to West Vancouver will soon see a new billboard, referring to the marijuana referendum campaign.

It's the latest effort launched by Sensible BC to sign up volunteers in a bid to force a province-wide vote on decriminalization.

Elections BC has already approved the group's plan to try to collect the needed 400,000 signatures to trigger a referendum. That 90-day campaign officially begins in September.

The group's Dana Larsen says the focus now is on recruiting supporters.

"We're not there yet. We had a huge autodialing campaign. That identified a few thousand new volunteers and tens of thousands of supporters."

But he insists they have the resources to pull it off.

"We do. This is a big effort and an expensive campaign. A lot of British Columbians are generously donating to our cause. There is a gentleman named Bob Erb in Terrace who won the lottery last year. He's been matching all of our donations."

He admits the province-wide petition drive is a massive undertaking.

"It's the type of thing that has only succeeded once before," he says, referring to the Bill Vander Zalm-led referendum petition back in 2010, which ultimately spelled the demise of the HST.

The referendum question would ask British Columbians if they are in favour of a proposed Sensible Policing Act.

"The first part of the Sensible Policing Act is an amendment to the BC Police Act, which redirects all police in the province from using any police resources, including member time, on investigations, searches, seizures, citations, arrests or detentions related solely to simple possession of cannabis," according to the Sensible BC website.

The new billboard goes up on Monday.
