Hebron, Maryland - CannaMED Pharmaceuticals is looking to bring a medical cannabis growing operation to Wicomico County. Thursday night, company leaders met with neighbors in Hebron to listen to concerns, answer questions, and explain how the company will be molded into the community.
CannaMED has already purchased a 47,000 square foot facility just off Route 50 in Hebron. The company already has contractors getting the building ready for growing and extensive research on cannabis. The Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission is not expected to issue licenses until August for growers, processors, or dispensers, but CannaMED officials said they want to be ready to hit the ground running if and when they receive their license.
Records show that 146 companies applied for a grower's license from the state, and another 124 companies are seeking a processor license. And 811 have applied for a dispensary license from Maryland.
For CannaMED, between the growing operation, offices, and research facility, security is a top priority.
"We're going to have a full-time around-the-clock security staff," said Jeffrey Siskind, the chairperson of CannaMED Pharmaceuticals. "The security element of the medical cannabis business in Maryland is as important as the growing piece."
Dozens of neighbors from the Hebron community attended Thursday night's town hall at the Hebron Lions Club. Some people told WBOC they were on hand to learn more about the operation and saw no issue the the cannabis facility in their community. However, there were others who came to the meeting with concerns they hoped would be addressed before they got on board with the new business in town.
"It's a money investment they're making," said Jim Ware of Hebron. "And greed gets involved in anything and ventures of that nature. Because marijuana is a painkiller but it's also a brain killer and I am concerned with all of it."
CannaMED officials said they are certain the facility in Hebron will become a big economic component in town and in Wicomico County. Plus, company leaders want CannaMED to become a integral part of the community.
"We're working right now in a partnership with Wor-Wic Community College on a training program. We actually hope to put a cannabis curriculum together that's accredited and hopefully, one day, nationally recognized," said Angeline Nanni, CEO of CannaMED Pharmaceuticals.
CannaMED officials told Hebron residents Thursday night that there would be plenty of future town hall style meetings and once the facility is closer to operation, neighbors would be allowed to tour the operation. Company leaders also said if they are awarded a grower's license from the state in August, the first cannabis plants could be ready for processing by the first of the year in Hebron.
