Nonprofit organizations that want to operate medical marijuana dispensaries must hand-deliver their final applications to state public health officials by Nov. 21.

Only organizations that made the cut during the first round of applications are being allowed to participate in this second and final phase, Massachusetts Department of Public Health spokeswoman Anne Roach said in an email.

The state DPH rejected two applicants who wanted to open medical marijuana dispensaries in Barnstable County but gave six applicants with Cape connections the green light to move to the next stage of the permitting process.

The DPH also approved all four applicants for Martha's Vineyard and two on Nantucket for the final phase.

Statewide, 158 out of 181 applicants were approved for the final phase, which includes paying a $30,000 nonrefundable application fee.

A selection committee will evaluate Phase 2 applicants on various factors, including their ability to meet the health needs of registered patients, appropriateness of the site, geographic distribution of dispensaries, local support and public safety plans, Roach said. An informational meeting for Phase 2 applicants will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Holiday Inn, 30 Washington St., Somerville.
